Egyptian pop has always been ruled by the dudes. And Yes, some Lebanese ladies has led it too, but few Egyptian females could succeed in this music business. Because they either lack the support from producers or that they stick to mostly conservative image.
I think in 2007 that changes when a young Egyptian singer released a chick album, in her songs she tells the guy to kiss the relationship goodbye. In the past Egyptian females pop songs were about being too crazy about the guy or just crying over a past relationship. Yasmeen still does that, it sells sometimes--listen to this one. But I find the kind of lyrics she pursues are different.
By different I mean, they might be on the feminist side of the equation. As females raises up to the occasion and stand up for themselves instead of waiting for the guy to do the right thing. I like this style becasue Yasmeen brings so much energy to those songs and she seems to feel comfortable with those confrontational songs.
While Yasmine might be out there to launch her career as she released an incredible second album few weeks ago, I think in this sense she has been changing the game for the young starlets to follow in her path.
