You Say Jordan, I Say Omar Al-Abdallat

Jordan has many pop singers that are now coming to entertain the larger Arab listener. Jordan has not been know for great music--they make some good TV dramas, but not much music. I remember when we first got a glimpse of Jordanian music when in the early 90s we saw Omar Al-Aballat singing for Jordan.

He wears the red kaffya and only the red kaffya making him the native son of the land, thus he can be the number one singer in that country. While he has been making music for two decades, his fame is big in Jordan, but has not translated much beyond the borders of the kingdom.

Still Omar is the proud son of Jordan who is the all Jordan star who can do no wrong. While his style can also fit in Lebanon and Syria where the melodies and the beats are similar, it might be that he does not work hard to build his name outside Jordan. If he goes mainstream, he might have to give up that Jordanian flavor about him. So for now it seems he is happy with the private gigs he gets in Jordan.
