In the wake of the Arab spring many wrote songs raging against the regime. In most Arab countries that happened, but in morocco. the country's entertainers have rallied around the King wit no defectors. Rappers even wrote love raps for the king and against his critics.
But rapper Mouad Belrhouate was never one of those cheerleaders. He wrote and performed rap against the regime and its "infallible" king. The rapper, who goes by the name of El-Haked, or The Indignant, was arrested on 9 September, accused of physically attacking and injuring someone in a scuffle. But most of us know, this charge is just as bogus as that country's secret service. His only crime is his lyrics dared to criticize the regime.
He is better known as El-Haqed — "the defiant one" — which describes lyrics explicitly critical of Morocco's social ills and the country's monarch. It's an attitude that also describes the young protesters of the February 20 protest movement. His supporters charge that this trial is an attempt to silence him — and them.
