In the age of mass production and mas media, it's refreshing to go back and revisit one instrument that has been in Egypt since the dawn of time--it's linked to the time of the pharaohs of Egypt.
Simsimyah, is that native instrument that is still used till this day in some pockets of Egypt and around that area. Simsimyah is popular with in the areas adjacent to the Suez Canal where the peasants played it in all their gathering and weddings.
there are many close cousins to this instrument like Tanboorah and Rababah that use the same pentatonic scale rule. Think of it as the primitive harp, i know this is a fancy instrument out here too. The instrument is one of the biggest musical heritage for the dark skinned Egyptians.
First local artist to use is was the Suez singer Kabarbar, then it reached Ismaelyah where local artists Ahmed Faraj played well. Then Port Said used it when artists Ahmed El Swahili picked it. This particular instrument has national significance in Egypt as during the war of attrition the local artists would entrain the troops and the Resistance groups motivating them to fight.
