The State run TV in Egypt (Maspero) has always been a joke among other TV networks. But ever since the Mubarak regime fell and we are learning more dirt on this shady entity. But here is what you need to know,
The Egyptian TV authority used to pay Arab and Egyptian celebrities top money (hard earned Egyptian money) to get them to appear on TV and say Egypt is the greatest country ever. In other words, the regime used to bribe Arab celebrities of talk show hosts, singers and actors Egyptian money to get them to appear on their network and say how awesome Egypt is. But thanks to the revolution all those stars now have nothing but nice things to say about Egypt and they gladly do it for free.
So the State TV was wasting people's money on Arab celebrities to get them to tell lies about Egypt to make the people feel good while the country was going to hell in a fast car. In that way during the Mubarak regime, the country was one giant night club where the Lebanese singers and dancers entertain the Gulf tourists and the Egyptian cannot afford to go to those events, but instead the dancers and singers go on the State TV and tell the Egyptian people a lie, your country is awesome.
So you will now better understand the reasons behind the importance of this entity and the ban issued on a number of its leaders on corruption charges. (For detailed account click here)
Some Nuggets:
- Mubarak calls in favors asking the State TV to support candidates and provide them with some coverage to help them win.
- Defaming the Revolution of January 25th
- Defaming El Baradei, the possible presidential candidate.
- Censoring anything that criticizes the dictator and his son and editing interviews.
- Using Amro Mossa, the head of the Arab league to calm down the protesters.
- Banning the appearance of Ayman Nour the popular opposition leader who was placed in jail in forgery charges.
