Amal Khadir, The First Lady Of Iraqi Romance Songs

Call her the blast from the past, while we love Elissa, for some reason I think she might be the incarceration of someone from the past. This someone, is Iraqi singer Amal Khadir. While Amal had a good run in the late 60s, 70s, 80s and well into the 90s, she is still alive and well, commenting on the state of Iraqi music.

In one of her interviews, Amal implied that has not taken her chance of fame like other singers from that golden era. Amal came to fame when Baghdad was the center for many Arab students pursing further education. Those students would take her music back home with them.

Amal comes from a family with strong musical tradition as few members of her family have entered the business before her including her older sister Saleemah. She came to Baghdad from her small city at a young age and started slowly. She has lots of Iraqi songs too, but her broader songs seem to be popular with many listeners. I like her cover of Iraqi folklore songs!
