Sherine Abdel Wahab: the Good, and the Ugly

Sherine Abdel Wahab of Egypt is a rare gem, in persona, style and grace. No two people can disagree on her voice and her iconic status. She started as pop, but then she found her zen and found a way to the hearts of millions with her one of a kind voice that guaranteed her mark on history.

Few can do Tarab style singing as Sherine can, she has dominated the world of emotions, and has an idea way with her voice to capture all sentiments one feels as the lyrics of a song progresses. In my humble opinion she is on her way to become the heir to the great musicians of the Arab world, of the likes of Shadya, Najat Al Sageera, Laila Morad and Fayza Ahamd. She is not short on anything those legendary stars had.

The trouble with Sherine is that she is Egypt's voice right now, she is the leading female voice of the land and the people. even though she continues to say she is second to Angham (the Egyptian singer) She had a flop and I am sure she regrets it now. See last year when President Hosny Mubarak was in Germany for medical treatment, she was asked by the state sponsored TV to release a song about the leader of the land. She did of course he is her president and she is the voice of the land, it's only proper.

But now things have changed, the president and his regime is now in trouble and Sherine was silent for few days, but when she spoke she was loud. She announced that she told the state TV that she will no longer appear on their channels. And she has announced support for the protesters in the Tahrir square, there is a talk of her making a visit (here's the link). I think Sherine has managed to survived the recent political climate in the same way Oum Kalthoum survived the 50s when the king was disposed. Oum Kalthoum used to sing for the king, but she also sang for those who came after him and she thrived.

Shereen Raysna - شرين ريسنا

Here's a her latest song to make nice with the protesters in Egypt and its towns.
