The Verstile Karim Mohsen Gets Married And Serenades His Bride

Few weeks ago, the lovable and talented musician Karim Mohsen got married to the lady of his dreams. He had a wedding party and many of his singer friends joined him and sang for him on their special day. Karim seems like a great guy and fun to sit with and see work. I like him a lot and love his songs and his compositions.

So since he has happy man, Karim released a romantic song to celebrate the happy occasion and being a husband. A song about the days of our lives. It's a clever song written in the first person from a guy in love declaring his love for his better half. Karim channels the sweetest version of himself for this song documenting his journey that eventually led him to meet his lovely bride.

It's a song about dreams. I like it because it comes with happy news. Had this song been released without Karim's wedding news or without knowing that it's addressed to real person, I may not have appreciated the way I do.

In other news, Karim Mohsen seems to be also working on an album project with the very proud title "I am Arab". I think this will be a timely album as more and more in Egypt are walking away form their connection to Arabs

The New Hamaki Album Arrives...It Deserves Five Stars!

15 full tracks of pop songs from all the best craftsmen working in Egyptian music industry. Why? Because one Hamaki is nice guy, people like to work with him. He is a savvy singer who makes anything better. And third he can afford them. "Omroh Ma Yeghib" is something to be proud of. Take for example hip lyricist Amir Teima he has six tracks with Hamaki, that's a strong duo. I wanted this album to be a perfect one and Hamaki did not disappoint. He took his time and gave anyone who listens to music--not just Arabic pop a reason to smile.

You will certainly, get your money's worth! 15 awesome fresh tracks that offer emotional complexity, joy, dance tears, breakup, happy ending, and sand ones. Here are all the tracks on Hamaki's album, you can enjoy them here. This serves as his seventh album to date and though his albums would usually have 10 to 12 songs. This album is a bit more generous.

I will be able to give a better review tomorrow, but this could not wait. Nogoom Records may not have many stars, but Hamaki is their alpha artist. Not many artist can produce an album with 15 tracks, Hamaki just did and perhaps the release date is far form ideal, it's still summer and Hamaki wants to be at you party and with you when you cry yourself to bed.

I just been listening to the album on my way to work and to be frank, this is some of the best pop music Egypt has given us in a really long time. The music is awesome, not just noise made by monkeys with a computer. Hamaki curated a perfect album and each of these 15 songs is a gem. Not a bad song. Sure, some of them are more exciting than others, but even the weak songs are still amazing. Hamaki is removing the completion here and owning the market, he made a good album which will place him to be the next big thing in Arabic pop. Expect to see Hamaki everywhere in the next few months.

WATCH This! Hamaki - Agmal Youm At His Best

This is what I call good pop from a real good guy who has all of sudden agreed to be cooler without looking like he is trying too hard. This marks the return of the pre-2011 Hamaki. The one who did different songs only did it better. I felt for the best years he has been doing same club mix crap everyone is doing.

The head song or the lead hit is been on a music video and it's so dancey, so fresh and sounds like a pop song even those who know little or no Arabic can find it neat. He is looking like a star who wants to dominate your summer playlist. He is back to the spot where sweet meets upbeat. I bet many will be happy for him in this track. This is closer to the Western pop music standards, but it is the right shade and in the right dose. Hamaki even manages to squeeze a little bit of him dancing.

The missing is just right on this song, the production value shows some real money. The team who helped Hamaki with this song should take a well-deserved vacation. The talent behind the music video did their job just right. I only this will be kicking around the radio for a long time. It's a party song and it works.

+Aziz: New Orleanian tones with a Flavor of Khaleeji Beats via @Arab_America @Plusaziz

Here's something you do not see every day!

Recent years saw a change in the Arabic music scene. While classic music, or what is known as Tarab, was trending during the sixties through the seventies, the rest of last century saw  Arab music taking a different theme, especially with the introduction of video clips. In order for singers to become more popular, they based their music on fast rhythms and simple lyrics, and presented the song with a video clip of high quality.

But recent years saw the rise of a totally different music genre, a genre that is more independent, uses social media to spread, and mixes different music genres from around the world to produce new styles.

+Aziz is a Kuwaiti singer- songwriter, as he loves to describe himself. On his about.me page, he writes: “Drawing on the ethos of alternative rock and folk, I am an Arab songwriter crafting songs that bring together Middle Eastern and New Orleanian heritages.”

The first thing that attracts you to the name is the + sign, and for that Aziz has a story.
“The + sign in front of my name is for branding purposes. I started using it in high school as a nickname. Some people thought I use it out of arrogance, others thought it comes out of my love for math. But at the end of the day, I love receiving different interpretations from people.”
+Aziz was born in Kuwait, where his parents originally come from, but has a strong relationship with United States. He was raised between Kuwait and America. He moved to New York in 2008, and then to New Orleans to deepen his understanding of music.

As a teenager, he used to listen to Kuwaiti music, but his real passion was towards western music. He also started having interest in the independent music scene in some Arab countries, such as Jordan and Lebanon. However, +Aziz realized there was no such scene in the Gulf where he lived. So that’s when he wanted to be part of a new landscape that could happen in that part of the world.
“While I was in the US, I started writing Arabic songs, and at that time, it was not about the meaning, but about the feelings it evokes,” says +Aziz.

Getting Fresh With Arabic Music, Azizi And Her "taraPOP" @AzizatBeirut

 

Aziza is a Lebanese Arabic "taraPOP" singer/songwriter. Debut album AZIZA to be released soon. I wrote about Aziz more than two years ago here. Not much has been done in the spotlight, but Aziza seems to have been so busy working on her second act and her debut album should be releasing any minute now. This proud young woman who likes the oldies, yet understands the relevancy of pop songs. She mixed them together and came up with something the masses can enjoy.

 

"taraPOP" describes Aziza's evolvement in mixing Arabic tarab with pop music. Her songwriting is based on reflections from her daily life, her moods, aspirations, fears, and how she responds to the outside world in her relationships with people, causes and the society. In the end, the outcome is Aziza's private vision of lyrics, melodies, and experiences .And.. this is what to expect from Aziza's upcoming debut album that will be released in 2014. A short teasers is below.

Aziza has a very capable voice so, she can cover more grounds. She dedicates her talent and time to her music, but marketing should not be ignored. She has a lot to offer and it's a  shame if more people do not get to experience it. She gets to renew old songs, but also make new songs that feel Déjà vu. It's like this feels familiar and fresh both at the same time. This is the magic of Aziza's style. Funky, classy, free, and groovy all at once.

Being a practiced musician, Michel Nehme decided to start a band back in 2007. A common friend recommended Dary as the vocalist. Having the same taste and passion for music they joined together with other friends of Michel to form the first line up of BeatRaid. They played covers for a while then they (Michel and Dary) decided to make their own songs together.

Sammy Elie, also a common friend that was inspired by Michel’s composing skills and Dary’s vocal abilities, wrote a song and handed it to Michel who composed the melody on the same night. The song instantly caught Dary's ears and was captivated by its oriental feel that was "unintentional and spontaneous" as Michel has said.

Zee Zee Adel Did a Lot of Growing Up For Her 2015 Album

Zee Zee Adel has finally released her third album. And it's bold in in more ways than one. First there is that haircut, that title "I am a Female". In the past I loved her 2009 album that was catchy and cool all at once. It seems this album is a bit more emotional, darker and mellower.

We all grow up and Zee Zee Adel may have grew a bit more than all of us since her last album. She is a rock star who have survived the past four years in Egypt. Now comes the year to thrive. I am pleased to see Mazzika pushing her new album. Any good album deserves attention....but all will be lost if the marketing does not keep up.

From the title of songs, Zee Zee Adel has a lot more personal songs on this album. I have yet to listen to all songs, but Zee Zee deserves the best. I do not see big names attached to the album, but that's not always a weekness.

Better late than never....

It's tough to decide on a list for best songs....I would not thin a ten list would be right, 20 would be better....as few songs were missing....Carol Samahe rocked it this year. Tamer Hosny has a sweet album, Donia Samer Ghanem had the greatest songs. Also Latifa rocked her way back into the top charts.

1. A song by Nancy--emotional, good choice
2. Elissa had one of the list, also dark emotional, sure thing 
3. Nassif Zeytoun, the Syrian charmer had a dark emotional upbeat track, I love this song
4. Amr Diab brings back the funk with el Liela. Sounds good
5. Tamer Hosny with Snoop Dogg made the list, mixed bag
6. Myriam Faris had some song--I actually had no idea about this song. It should not be on the list

8. Samira Said made the list with her comeback song--it's catchy.
9. Wael Jassar was a dark romantic song about withdrawing and surrendering
10. Tunisian Saber El Robaei made the list with a Gulf dialect track. It should not be on the list

Ziad Khoury, the Lebanese heartthrob and just nice guy and Arab Idol runner-up is back with a really cool song that shows off why he is famous in the first  place. Ziad has toured the world with his friend and fellow Arab Idol Mohamed Assaf. They duo seem to be the best of friends. And this is not something you see every passing day.

However, this once Ziad Khoury is all on his own, a song with a clever title, gadgets, sweet ride and friends on the road. The song glows happy, but it does not swing in full-speed until Ziad shows us his Mawal skills. He is way good for his age and this is something Lebanese and others appreciate. This is a love song but for those who like fun and games. Ziad deserves to be where he is, I like his style. I did meet him and felt he was genuine and warm. Now he is doing the Debka thing, but not until he won your mind.

Wissam Al Amir the colorful Lebanese singer and composer wrote this song to his buddy and home boy Zaid. I like the sense of party and the dance moves Ziad busts. Well-done team Ziad Khoury. This song allows Ziad to be pretty much anything he wants to be. He won over all demographics with one single--not an easy job.

Zahi Wehbee: The Most Interesting Man In #Lebanon (Zahi Wehbi)

Media personality, celebrity, and TV host Zahi Wehbi has been making and hosting TV shows from the Lebanese capital, he is one of the most respected figures in the industry, a mature man who is really good at what he does, this is his second high-rated TV program where he hosts entertainment figures and gets them to talk with no drama. He is also a poet where people go to attend his events reading poetry.

In his interview he talked about the sad state of the Lebanese media, they took a setback due to the many networks and local nature of these programs. He believes in the Lebanese brand, and I really like to listen to what he has to say. A sober man who knows what he is talking about. He seems not to be pleased with the political situation in Lebanon and in the larger Arab world.

The Most Exciting Egyptian Diva! Dina El Wedidi @ElwedidiDina

Dina El Wedidi became known name in the indie music scene only three years ago. The Egyptian singer, composer, guitarist, Daf player, actress, and storyteller finally gets an album out. The title is "Turning Back", something the entire country of Egypt is experiencing at the moment. Dina has been known as the lead performer of an ensemble of musicians who have performed extensively in the past 2 years, fusing local and global styles of music.

Dina's best talent is in her ability to convey complicated messages and detailed stories in a very simple manner. I like her music, she puts my soul at ease. Her style of choice is something of a novelty in the music scene. I enjoy the intimate musical experience this album offers. Each of the eleven tracks tackle a different subject. You will not help but revisit many of the songs, it's not an album one listens to and forgets/ditches.

Wait a minute is that Gilberto Gil that we hear in the third track? Wow for all these young women dressed in short skirts trying to sell records, Dina pulls a stunning upset with an album so good, it makes you think this is not an Arabic album. "Turning Back" does not fall into the same trap, most indie album fall into, it's not boring and it's certainly upbeat and fresh.

The album takes you in a journey that defies time and borders. It feels like one of those lesser known artists form the fifties. To my ears the orchestra makes me think I am watching a live Simon Shaheen concert. As a new father, I want Zayna to grow up and do many things, I would not have a problem with her doing with Dina has just done.

The Always Evolving And Fresh Tamer Abu Ghazaleh @Tamer_AG

In your dictionary, if you wanted to look Indie Arab musician, you may as well find a picture of Tamer Abu Ghazaleh. Born to Palestinian parents in the city of Cairo, He grew up there and legend has it he started to sing at age two and composed music at the tender age of ten. He is  composer of alternative Arabic music, and an Oud, Buzuq, and vocal performer.

Tamer cares for Palestine so much, but he thinks the cause should not mean not paying attention to his music. This is why Tamer seeks alternative music, he just does not want Arabic music as is, he wants to expand its definition and take it into new territories. Uncharted one, most of the time these ideas do not attract producers and companies, but Tamer's music has found a growing audience around the world. I have seen him perform in Washington DC few years back. Now he has already sold out concerts in Beirut, Alexandria, Cairo, Amman and Tunis.

Aside from his own songs and his play on the oud, Mr. Abu Ghazaleh has been an active musical collaborator for many years. Projects include: starting the cross-genre group Kazamada (2010); working with Palestinian & Egyptian artists on Jehar (with Huda Asfour), Duo Buzuq (with Rabea Jubran) and Kalam Mazzika (with Salam Yousry); and performing on Khaled Jubran's Psalms (2005). In 2008, Tamer released Thawret Ala (Revolution of Worry), a collaborative piece of musical theatre that was performed by the Al-Tamye Theatre Group.

I cannot help but enjoy his style of music, and performance. He is an indie storyteller, and growing in Egypt allowed him to have a funny bone that shows in his live performances. The Palestinian within him resilience and resourcefulness. His songs are unpredictable, you can never what he will say next. And you can never tell if he will cry, make you cry or tell a joke. So he sings About love, hate, comfort, boredom, excitement and everything before and after.

On a different note, as Palestinians are used to listening to Egyptian singers, they produce so many more songs and have many more artists. It means a lot to see one of our own entertain the people of Egypt. Tamer is not mainstream, but the well-read people and activists appreciate his talent.

The Sleepess And Restless Girl Song Lands, Long Live Indie Music!

Many of us were mistaken to think we have seen the end of indie vocalist Hanan Madi, she just recorded and released a new song. This is a nostalgic song for a generation who grew up knowing Hanan and her soothing voice and music videos. The new song is the lyrics of Amr Hassan and the music of Mostafa Al Assal.

The filming of this music video took three days and two different locations the second location was a restaurant inside the district of Zamalik. The resilient city of Ismailya served as the first location. The young artist who is featured here is Ali Al Alfi, he is working on his own album which is set to release next April--the song will be included then.

Originally, this was a poem that came to Ali, he loved it and approached his new friend Hanan to sing along--she agrees and did not ask for a fee. Hanan is a fan of this indie artist. She was quoted to have said this is my generation passing the torch to the next.

The song itself is about a woman who is unable to sleep. She is love sick and unable to move forward with her life as of yet. Hanan felt that she is singing this song for her own girl. This goes once again to show that indie artists are able to make new music that feels real and that address real issues not canned subjects..

Talal Kontar Does Music Differently....See How in "Ken Ya Ma Ken"

Talal Kontar is not a disposal artist and he does not do disposal songs. Instead he does satire songs that he assembled from scratch. In Dubai he helps sell makeup brands, plans events and produces jingles for TV and radio ads. But at home in Beirut, he does something else....Talal writes and composes songs that express his Oriental background with a modern twist. Talal did study music in both Spain and Lebanon where he refined his craft.

Somethings Go Well Together! Shoaib ft. Asfalt - Shetan @Asfaltmusic @Axeerstudio

Axeer Studio of Egypt continues to sponsor so many of Egypt's underground indie music scene. The studio produces roughly a song every two months and the stuff they produce is pretty heavy on messaging and positive social observations. They have also done plenty of political stuff. this once they teamed Shoaib (an indie Arab artist who has gone solo since 2012, he is a composer and producer) and Asfalt (Asfalt, an Egyptian hip-hop duo, consists of rappers Ibrahim Farouk and Mohamed Gad. Through their music, Asfalt takes on a variety of social, political, and cultural issues. The) for a song about the devil.

This is a rap song with soul. The track is about the devil each of us have within us. Sure, philosophical some may see it. But the music heals your heart and cures your soul if the message would not get to you. It's a grownup song that only a mind that thinks and operates would appreciate it. It's not for those who want empty stuff, but people who want to reflect.

The Latin Beat Takes Over For Fahad ft. Mohamed Mohy - Summer Time

Fahad is a well known music producer, music arranger and celebrity among the music world. He almost worked exclusively for Amr diab and Angham for years. Now he is stepping out the shadows for a new single for the shy but popular Mohamed Mohy. Fahad is a big deal that his name comes before the name of Mohy in this track. Now both artists are working on their own albums, but they took a break o record this interesting song.

"Summer Time" releases in the Fall, but still it's a song all the cool kids in Egypt will be shaking their heads to. I like it's Latin beat, and whatever other exotic musical elements they have thrown here. I guess this could be a bit of white boy reggae. You will hear English, Spanish and Arabic in this breezy track. Fahad is singing in English here. The song will be in an album project assembled by Fahad. I think this would be a nice musical revolution in the zombie like Arab pop.

I like Fahad, he has given us so many hits--he is the guy behind the curtain who mixes some sick beats and produces music that makes one's ears happy. So far, we now know Samira Said will have a song in the upcoming album, Khaled Selim will sing a Gulf song, and Mohamed Adawieh will sing once again with his dad. New comer Asma will show us what she has.

Video: Joe Raad, Do You Like/Hate His New Song "Nzara Minnak"? @JoeRaad

Joe Raad is many things to different people. For starter he is a renowned Lebanese celebrity hair dresser. No one in Arabia has a bigger name that he does, he can seen kicking it with the pop divas, stars, entertainers and TV personalities, he has the golden touch and the golden scissors.

However, few month ago, a rumor flew around the internet the hairdresser is making a song and shooting a music video. If I remember correctly, he denied this rumor and dismissed it as a joke. I remember reading a Lebanese music blog that called it a bizarre move.  

But comes October 11th, I was shown this music video by a lady from Beirut and her singer husband, both were mocking the music video. Unlike them, I will not do the easy thing and joke about the Joe Raad music video.

I will say the good things about it, the location is one of the prettiest ones I have seen in such a long time. Great choice, I kayak, so I appreciated the shoots of the celebrity hair dresser engaging in this support. I love the birds, and the flamingos, the backup dancers bring some missing colors. Joe brings some of the most fashion-forward outfits I have seen in one music videos. He is trying to have a good time, and his dance moves are pretty entertaining.

The song has a good beat, and the Egyptian lyrics are fun--I have heard worse songs. I like the dancy bit where the chorus kicks in. Now, this is Joe's first music video, I am sure if he makes another one he will do a fine job.

Joe Raad had always dreamed of embracing a singing career, for he had traveled in his dream riding the notes on a musical score, refining his talent through studying to play the Oud (Lute) and the piano. Thus he registered some songs and video clips after which he decided to adopt the hair design career in which he achieved impressive and distinctive successes.

This decision was made with the encouragement of the fine sensitive artist, Majed El Mohandes. He encouraged Joe Raad to benefit from his hobby and turn his dream into reality. Thus, the song "Nazra Minnak", lyrics by Hani Abdel Karim, and music by Tamim and Sinan Akçil , was recorded in Majed El Mohandes studios in Cairo and filmed in the Bahamas. 

I give him credit for not bringing half-naked models--like the others all do. He is not harming anyone, and it's all for the sake of fun. I do not see him doing any harm, and I welcome his contribution.
