The Next Big Morccan Music Thing Will Habe Houda Saad's Name

No woman makes better music from Morocco (or inspired by Morocco) like Houda Saad does. I think there's a special place for her in Arabic pop, but also her bigger and more prominent place is in Morocco where she can be the authority in her country's music.

Sure there are scores of artists from Morocco who have done well, but many of them they do not stick with it. Houda Saad can. She has shown in the past four years that each song she has done using that dialect is a stand alone story.  Moroccan pop does not have to be weird or too exotic for the casual Arab fan, Houda makes it accessible. I mean in a way, she meets the listener half way through, she keeps the dialect but on the music she can work with a number of elements.
 
This is why I thought her "La Hadi Oula Hadik" is a perfect song to speak to what I am thinking. I know she has done many songs in all Arabic dialects, but the Moroccan ones seem closer to her heart. Beside having a capable voice, she is a music composer and a lyricist, so she can contribute in all fronts.

Somebody hit the snooze button please, The X Factor Returns!

MBC took over The X Factor  from CBC and the program just had its first episode and held a press conference in Dubai. The slick Mazen Hayek was there talking about their upcoming program. The event even had a guest band form the UK who won the British 2011 X Factor.

There will be bands and covers of foreign songs. You can be 8 years old or 80, it does not matter. This season has three not four judges, Elissa kept her chair, Ragheb Alama returns to these shows, Donia Samir Ghanem has a new chair. Ragheb is talking about his show and his friends. He is a savvy marketer and MBC is happy about it.

Maybe this will mange not to be the most boring show ever, or the show that the judges had little chemistry. Watch their press conference. This would be the fifth show, can people of the Arab world get a break? Too many shows, too many young people with big promises and little to do.

I do not see much of a big difference between Lebanese pop stars and their western counterparts. They have a lot in common, and the boldness of the Lebanese performers makes up the difference that has traditionally kept them apart. With that, we end up making music in Lebanon just like they do in the West, which means the loss of diversity and the lost of unique flavors.

Take fro example, one of the youngest pop stars in Lebanon is Sabine, and see her rehearse for one of her concerts, this is some raw footage from a dance studio and some guy's voice telling Sabine how to better her moves. Is this appealing to Western audience? Not really, but it might be surprising to see a talent like this come from a what's considered conservative region

Has Syrian Samo Zen Has Overstayed His Welcome?

There was a time when I have liked Samo Zaen, when he was hungry and when he had to work twice as hard to impress people. Not this time, he does not even seem to care much for his look, not to say his voice which has not found a decent songs in a long time. He is due to release a new album next week, the cool thing the album will come in two releases.

One for Egypt with nine tracks, and one in the Gulf with 11 tracks including one local song and track with Haifa Wehbe doing the mew thing. A clever marketing since most albums get shared online from Egypt- the Gulf edition would be exclusive to that region.

Samo Zaen seems to think he is bigger than he really is, he too thinks he has mad skills. His average or rather non-existent musical skills. And we agree. Sure, he is a pretty face. But name one song of hers that is hummable. But he needn't worry. He isn't alone in her mediocrity.

Here's some tips for him

1. Work on your "resonators" (i.e. where it is you are singing from) - you can sing from your head, your chest and your stomach. NEVER sing from your nose - it will NEVER sound good. EVER. Brandon Boyd may have fooled the world - doesn't mean you can. I was taught it's best to sing with your "head voice" most to start off with and try and hit all your notes while singing from that region before moving to the chest and stomach.

2. As an exercise, work your way from your lowest note, to your highest note in one breath - so *low: aaaaaaaaaaaa- *mid: aaaaaaaaaa- *high: aaaaaaaaaah. The trick is to 1. do it in one breath and 2. make sure the transition between the different ranges is as seamless as possible. It will never be seamless, but get as close as you can by doing this as often as you can. 3. Singalong with other singers.

He might be the best thing about male pop and romance in Egypt, he is out with a new album, but it will be weeks till we hear it, the promo is out and we  have 11 songs. This is a winner album, the guy sounds really good and he has taken his time making this album--do not lose your cool though.

Mohammed Nour, is on fire and I really and sincerely hope people buy the album form the stores. The album is about how sweet and bright the days are. Male pop stars cannot really do this kind of romance without coming across as moping, Nour does a good job here. He also has offers dance tracks. He is a romantic boy who won't quit nor will he hate.

He does it by singing straight tot he loved one, instead of telling other people about how much he has worked to make a relationship work. This is the artists' second solo album, and I think I find no shame in enjoying his songs.

Carole is an intellect entertainer....she has a good head on her shoulder and now she has been talking up about this show....This will be some high budget show that's well-rehearsed....lucky these Lebanese residence they get to enjoy this show. I know the show will be touring around the Arab World and maybe ultimately to the States...

I hope the critics let us in on how they really feel.....
