In the 50s and 60s in Egypt there was some elitism problem when it come to all aspects of life--elitism music was one of them. One of those who suffered the backlashes of such elitism is none other than the folksy singer Mohammad Abdel Motalib who was a student of the iconic Egyptian folk singers of the likes of Al Ezzaby, and Mohammad Roshdy
When Mohammad Abdel Motalib started signing on the Egyptian radio, he was big with the masses and was loved by the great deal of listeners. Why? He used simple langauge, talked folksy tales. Using simple melodies. While the great music was being made in upscale opera houses, Mohammad Abdel Motalib made it in the radio station and got quicker to people's hearts.
He was a member of the Mohamad Abdewahab band of vocalists, he was a vocalists in Badee'a Masabny band. He appeared in movies and plays, but he was never like big with the elitist band--he was signing for the people. in 1964 Gamal Abedel Nassir gave him an ward, and he passed away in 1980s leaving a huge archive of music that can easily be described as timeless.
